As a result of the ongoing national Corona-virus epidemic, the Philadelphia Criminal Court has suspended operations concerning trials and jury duty until April 3, 2020. This is a concern for those people who have family members that are in the Philly Prison System. While trials are being continued, those incarcerated have to wait until their cases are re-scheduled. Although April 3, 2020 is the effective opening date for the courts, nobody is aware what the closing will mean for getting cases heard before a judge. In the interim, the Courts are accepting criminal filings. Those filings include motions for bail, motions to modify bail, motions for early parole and motions to lift detainers. Filing one of these motions are opportunities to potentially get someone out of jail quicker than waiting for a new court date. A motion for early parole would potentially allow a person, currently serving a sentence, to be released earlier than previously expected.
